Under National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP), an initiative was taken in the sub-project “Strengthening of Digital Library and Information Management under NARES (E-Granth)”which provides digital access to different library resources for National Agriculture Research System in India which comprises of Agriculture Research Institutions and State Agricultural Universities. In this initiatives a digital repository “Krishikosh” (http://krishikosh.egranth.ac.in/) and digital library platform “IDEAL” (Indian Digital Ensemble of Agricultural Libraries) (http://ideal.egranth.ac.in/) has been developed for capturing, digitizing and online sharing of library resources in order to cater to the increasing need of the Scientists, Researchers, Teachers and extension community.
Under the ICAR's Open Access policy, Krishikosh provides ready software platform to implement all aspects of the open access policy, similar to ‘Cloud Service’ for individual institution’s self-managed repository with central integration. IARI is hosting the ‘Krishikosh’ Repository at AKMU Data Centre of IARI. Krishikosh is a customized implementation of open source software ‘DSpace’. Under Krishikosh, 50 SAUs and 31 ICAR Institutes are giving the contribution in E-Granth facilities, but at present NARS have 63 State Agricultural Universities (SAUs), 5 Deemed University , 3 Central Agricultural University (CAUs) and 103 ICAR Institute therefore there is a scope to extend the E-Granth facility to the remaining Agricultural Universities/ Deemed Universities/ CAU/ Institutes. In accordance to the ICAR open access policy, it is mandatory to keep a digitized repository of the resources (including thesis) for each Institution. The efforts were made for uploading the thesis and other contents in the Institutional repository by the respective Institute and University on the priority basis (upto 15 Sept, 2016 more than 23000 thesis are uploaded in Krishikosh repository, besides these more than 61 thousand articles including the thesis are available in this repository)
For easy access to this repository, new initiatives have been taken up for efficient development and dissemination of Krishikosh to the end users of NARES. These initiatives includes the efforts for addition of new library, development of tutorial video, development of database for NARES library, use of Social Media, upgrade the Dspace version from 4.x to 5.x, development of mobile application for Krishikosh, etc. In Krishikosh, 28 new Library from various universities / Institute have been added. The efforts were made for uploading the thesis and other contents in the Institutional repository by the respective Institute and University on the priority basis (upto 26 Sept, 2016 more than 23000 thesis are uploaded in Krishikosh repository, besides these more than 61 thousand articles including the thesis are available in this repository).
DEAL is a ready platform for Agricultural Libraries of Indian National Agricultural Research & Education System (NARES) which enables them to adopt Integrated Library Management System for their day to day operations of all their library functionality. It is a software platform built on ‘Software as a Service’ (SaaS) concept to provide hassle free, ready to use, international standards based platform for sharing library holdings through an union catalog (AgriCat). An integrated digital library delivered at the desk of researchers, faculty and students of NARES can definitely boost the quality of research output and save time. Libraries can reduce cost incurred in procuring books & other library resources by sharing through this digital system. At present 38 libraries of NARES as a part of eGranth project supported by National Agriculture Innovation Project (NAIP) of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have endeavor to establish IDEAL platform which is easily extendible to more libraries covering whole NARES. Vast resources spread all over NARES can be made accessible by few clicks. For library users all over NARES, an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) of their own library provides easy and enhanced experience of using library online, sitting at their desk either in lab or home. Even while on move they can access their library using smart phone. Integrated catalog of whole NARES (AgriCat) provides access to holdings of other libraries of NARES. A robust set of servers along with failover servers operational at the data centre of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, New Delhi provide hosting facilities for customized Koha open source software running independent instances for each library. Local mirror servers at individual libraries in sync with their koha instance at central server ensures redundancy and high availability. However, those who are not running their local server may run offline Koha module on any desktop to ensure uninterrupted circulation services in the event of connectivity failure. All circulation data can be easily uploaded to central server for maintaining full record as soon as connectivity is restored. Any library under NARES willing to be part of IDEAL needs to bring their catalog data to standard format and learn how to use Koha ILMS for library functioning. It is not necessary to run any server or koha software locally.
